ACCIONA SUPPORTS ERNESTINE’S WOMEN SHELTER

08/12/2021

Toronto, DECEMBER 9, 2021.This year, ACCIONA renewed its support of Ernestine’s by providing a $3,000 donation of food for the shelter.

Ernestine’s Women Shelter provides support and a safe place for women and children escaping violence. The shelter assists survivors in rebuilding their lives by providing crisis intervention and  support services. The shelter’s work is predicated upon the belief that recovery necessitates addressing the range of challenges faced by survivors of abuse.

ACCIONA, a civil engineering company delivering sustainable infrastructure solutions in Canada since 2001, opened a new office in Toronto a year ago. Its mission is also to support the communities where their projects take place.  “Donating to Ernestine’s during food inflation and pandemic challenges raises awareness about the cause Ernestine’s serves.” explained Martin Landry, VP of Business Development North America. “This has been a challenging time for families in need and we hope this encourages other companies to support Ernestine’s.”

The pandemic has accentuated the urgency to support Canadian Women experiencing violence. According to the Canadian Women’s Foundation, every six days a woman in Canada is killed by her intimate partner. Children who witness violence in the home experience twice the rate of psychiatric disorders as children from non-violent homes, the foundation reported.

Last year (2020-2021) Ernestine’s Women’s Shelter:

  • Responded to 1,584 crisis calls
  • Provided shelter and support to 52 adults and 33 children, who called Ernestine’s their home
  • Offered lifelines to 269 adults and 355 children in the community through our Outreach Programs
  • Provided 325 check-ins and supportive engagement to children and youth
  • Respond to 1,397 crisis calls through our Outreach Program, which is a 40% increase from the previous year
  • 252 adults and 344 children were serviced as a result of the 735 times Ernestine’s food support services were accessed. This is a 70% increase in number of families who received food support.
