ACCIONA Construction presents its advances in nanotechnology to increase the durability of concrete structures


It took part in the International Conference on Advanced and Nano Materials 2017 (ICANM) held in Canada from 7 to 9 August.

ACCIONA Construction has presented its latest advances in nanotechnology applied to infrastructure development, at the International Conference on Advanced and Nano Materials 2017 (ICANM).

ICANM, which took place in Toronto from August 7th - 9th 2017, is one of the leading events for the advanced materials sector. The conference was attended by representatives from academic and business institutions who presented their latest developments in nanotechnology, an area that can offer important solutions for sectors such as energy, electronics, medicine and construction.

Nanotechnology allows new, more resistant and longer lasting materials to be manufactured, improving their water resistant qualities. This is especially important for hydraulic works and port infrastructure projects, among others, such as those carried out by ACCIONA around the world.

At ICANM 2017, José Cubillo, head of the advanced materials group at ACCIONA Construction, gave a talk about various success stories in which advanced materials have contributed to increasing the durability of different structures, including concrete caissons constructed in the port of Carboneras (Almería) and the Los Mármoles dock (Las Palmas). 

ACCIONA Construction also presented a study carried out by the advanced materials area focused on developing nano-silica hydrophobic coatings to increase the durability of civil infrastructures.

Nano-silica particles were synthesised during the study, which were subsequently used to develop a water-resistant coating for pieces of concrete. This coating was then subjected to durability tests.

To demonstrate the effectiveness of this material, concrete structures in two ACCIONA projects were selected – the Baiña waste water treatment plant in Spain and the bridge in Veddesta, Sweden.

This material improved the waterproofing qualities of the structures it was applied to, resulting in greater durability and greater resistance to external factors.

Ensuring resistance to water, corrosion, weather and other agents is a major concern in infrastructure construction and the use of nanotechnology and advanced materials in the construction sector can offer new and optimised functionalities.
