Globalvia buys ACCIONA’s share in Barcelona tram concessions

Globalvia now to control 42% of Barcelona trams.

The operation is part of the mature assets rotation plan put in motion by ACCIONA.

The infrastructure management company acquires 11.78% in Tramvia Metropolità, S.A. and 12.88% of Tramvia Metropolità del Besòs from ACCIONA.

The two Barcelona tram lines aggregate over 24 million passengers a year.

Globalvia has successfully completed the acquisition of the 11.78% and 12.88% share owned by ACCIONA in Tramvia Metropolità S.A. and Tramvia Metropolità del Besòs S.A. respectively, the companies that operate the two Barcelona tram lines. Thanks to this operation, Globalvia -which was already the largest shareholder- extends its participation to control 42.44% and 43.05% of these companies.

For Globalvia this operation represents a significant move to consolidate its railway infrastructure management portfolio, as well as a further step towards the leadership position in transport infrastructure management at the national and global levels. Globalvia is already managing several railway infrastructures in Spain, including Metro de Sevilla (Seville), Tranvía de Parla (Madrid) Metro Ligero de Sanchinarro (Madrid), Metro Barajas (line 8 of Metro de Madrid) and Transportes Ferroviarios de Madrid (Line 9B of Metro de Madrid).

For ACCIONA, this operation is part of its concession assets rotation scheme, which provides for the sale of mature assets to drive new investment.

24 million passengers

The Baix Llobregat line runs along Avenida Diagonal passing through S. Feliú de Llobregat to Cornellà. The project was awarded by the Barcelona Town Council Autoritat del Transport Metropolità (ATM) in 2000 and operations started in 2004.

The system has an infrastructure of 29 stops, 3 interchange stations with Metro and 1 with Renfe (railway), and a total length of 15.1 km. The second tram network in Barcelona, Tramvia Metropolità del Besòs, links the north-eastern part of Barcelona with the neighbouring cities of Sant Adrià de Besòs and Badalona. The concession was awarded by the ATM in 2002.

The first phase came into operation in May 2004 and the complete system in 2008. It has 27 stops, 8 interchange stations with Metro and 1 with Renfe, and a total length of 14.1 km.

The annual number of passengers on both lines is more than 24 million.
