At ACCIONA, innovation is at the heart of how we design and deliver sustainable solutions that address global challenges. We integrate the latest technological advances into every stage of our projects, from design and construction to operations and new business development, bringing advanced solutions closer to our partners and communities to accelerate sustainable progress across Canada.
We combine open, disruptive, and digital innovation with the expertise of our global network of specialized innovation centres. Recognized internationally for leadership in construction, water management, and renewable energy, these centres develop the tools, products, and services that strengthen resilience and create lasting value.
From our Global Digital Hub at the ACCIONA Campus in Madrid, we deploy technologies that meet real-world needs. Our work spans data and artificial intelligence, IoT, immersive technologies, robotics, and 3D printing, turning bold ideas into practical solutions that enhance performance, reduce environmental impact, and support stronger communities and a more sustainable planet for future generations.
ACCIONA’s North American Innovation award fosters collaboration, creativity and purpose-driven innovation across regional operations. This initiative brings together employees from diverse disciplines across Canada and the United States to develop solutions addressing real operational challenges faced by projects and business units.
More than 60 participants from 15 cross-functional team tackles 16 innovation challenges sourced directly from ongoing operations. From geospatial data integration to on-site digitization, teams explore a broad range of topics, applying advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, big data, and digital twins to propose scalable, high-impact solutions.
Throughout the program, participants receive structured support from the innovation team through workshops, working sessions, and feedback reviews. Finalist teams present their proposals at the Innovation Awards ceremony, traditionally help in September.
The initiative reinforces ACCIONA’s commitment to cultivating a culture of innovation, sustainability and continuous improvement, transforming ideas into practical solutions that enhance infrastructure delivery and long-term value creation across North America.
ACCIONA’s BIM team piloted OpenSpaceAI’s BIM Module on the Broadway Subway Project to strengthen construction oversight through real-time site capture and seamless BIM integration. The initiative provides field teams with advanced tools to overlay digital models onto live site conditions, improving visibility and coordination on site.
By combining 360-degree imaging with augmented reality capabilities, BIM models can be superimposed directly onto the construction environment, enabling accurate visualization of planned, existing and temporary works. This enhances the early detection of discrepancies, reduces rework and supports more efficient progress tracking and documentation.
The pilot forms part of ACCIONA’s broader digital innovation strategy in infrastructure delivery and has supported the wider adoption of this and similar technologies across other projects.
ACCIONA’s AIM Roads team in British Columbia is advancing highway maintenance through a Computer Vision initiative developed in collaboration with the Digital Hub. Part of the FATDA (now MIRAI) digital transformation program, the project was implemented in 2024 to automate the detection of pavement and signage deficiencies across more than 9,000 km of roads in the South Okanagan and Okanagan-Shuswap regions.
The initiative replaces traditional manual inspections with an AI-powered solution that uses computer vision to identify defects such as potholes and deteriorated signage, classifying them in accordance with maintenance contract requirements. The system enhances inspection accuracy and consistency, improves safety for field personnel, increases operational efficiency, and ensures the anonymization of sensitive data.
This project reflects ACCIONA’s commitment to digital transformation and innovation in infrastructure maintenance and operations, strengthening service quality while supporting more efficient and sustainable asset management.
ACCIONA's projects in North America achieve waste reuse and recovery rates exceeding 86%, demonstrating leadership in circular economy practices.
They harness hydrostatic pressure with a deep-sea reverse osmosis (DSRO) technology to produce drinking water.
This autonomous, electrically powered device marks a breakthrough in making geothermal energy accessible to households.
Cutting-edge technologies—from AI to self-repairing concrete—are making it possible to build infrastructure that withstands natural disasters and other severe challenges.
